A Christmas Story

Twas the night before Thanksgiving and where did we go…to A Christmas Story!

IMG_5364We all loved it!  It was true to the movie and perhaps more poignantly drove home the message to enjoy children and the holidays and not worry about all the details.  A good message to go into the holiday season with.

IMG_5373Then came the surprise for the boys- a backstage tour, courtesy of family friends!  We saw the sets, costumes, props and all the inner workings of backstage.  It was so awesome!  We even met one of the actors from the show- John Bolton who plays the dad!  We mentioned Bren’s love of theater and his summer performance of Pippin- a play he had been in as Pippin!  I’ve never seen Bren’s eyes so wide!  He shared that the two plays had something in common- both had dead duck!

The boys couldn’t stop talking about everything they saw- both backstage and during the show! (and were upset they have to wait until Monday to share)

Now they need to see the movie!

Lessons from India…a year later

68107_10151254524170983_2097581384_nGoing to India last year was the experience of a life time.  It was incredible and all of us gain so much from going.

The first full day we were there was the Sangeet party.  It was a celebration before the wedding.  Two men came and each of the women had a chance to have beautiful henna designs drawn on our hands.  It expanded to several of the American men.  Both boys were fascinated by the designs and tradition.  It was offered for each to have designs drawn on their hands and both refused.  After one of the older boys decided to take a turn, Brendan changed his mind but Aidan didn’t.  Finally Aidan came around, but it was too late.  The men had left.

Renu-Brendan-Wedding-Wedding-121Aidan was disappointed, Bren was glad he said yes.  We had a conversation that night about how experiences and opportunities are sometimes once in a lifetime and how when offered, you need to be willing to try something and step out of your comfort zone.  It was reinforced throughout the trip by all who commented on Bren’s henna and asked Aidan where his was.  For all the experiences in India, when either would be wary (riding a camel, horse and elephant, dancing in the wedding procession, meeting new people), we would simply say “this is like the henna….”.  It would make them think and say yes.

And that has continued often throughout the year.  Simply mentioning “this is like the henna” puts things into perspective.  What a lesson to learn at such a young age.  One they will keep with them for sure.

First Swim Meet at Teammates

Both boys started swimming with Chris in water babies before they were a year old.  Both have loved it- especially their years swimming with Ms. Siobhan.  When Aidan outgrew swimming lessons at the Y, he continued at the Condon and before long at the urging of a friend joined the swim team.  I think he competed in the last two or three meets when he was in first grade.

Similarly, Bren finished swim lessons with Ms. Siobhan and moved over to swim at the Condon.  He competed in his first official swim meet this month!  He has friends from his class are on the team- there was actually a freestyle relay team of the four of them!

I think Bren really liked it- and Aidan enjoyed having him on the team!
