Camping at Castle Island

IMG_9009Anyone who knows me, knows camping and the great outdoors is not something I would sign up for enthusiastically. However, when Erin told me about the Capital Campout at Castle Island- the first time anyone would be camping at the fort- it was hard to say no. And we all had a great time!

IMG_9049We arrived on Friday and the tents were set up. All the equipment was ready for us. We made a family flag, we played “old fashioned” games, heard stories from the Tea Party actors and we got to know the other families- other 4th graders. Governor Baker came to kick off outdoors month and told the kids stories and make s’mores. Brendan shared that I didn’t vote for him. (of course)

We toured the fort as the sunset, listened to the story teller and the kids loved playing flashlight tag and manhunt win the dark.

IMG_9072On Saturday we woke up to a downpour! The rain stopped and the kids participated in fishing, yoga, learning to read a compass and more fun games.

It was fun to spend time with the kids and their friends doing something new. They want to try it again! (But Sully’s probably won’t be an option)

What we did on our summer vacation

In short…. A LOT!!  The kids are so fun and really enjoy summer fun!

We started out with our trip to England.  Clearly a highlight!  No question we all loved our trip- the things we did and saw and experienced.  There are still conversations about the trip and I suspect there will be for a long time (Bren is obsessed with Wicked).

IMG_7102Camps were a big part of the summer- sailing again for Aidan plus a week of science camp, drama camps (plural) for Brendan.  We saw a few shows too- ones Bren and his friends were in and also Finding Neverland at the ART (it’s going to Broadway!!)

We had half of July and all of August to enjoy.  And boy did we!!  We had a couple of trips to York Beach.  It wouldn’t be summer without toes in the sand, crashing waves and a trip to Brown’s to end the day.  It is fun to watch the kids venture out a little deeper and spend a more time playing together. It gives me and Chris time to enjoy the summer too.IMG_1372

We went back for another shot at Zorbing.  So much fun to roll down a hill!  We also tried kayaking for the first time.  We went to Canobie Lake (first time in four years for the kids- first family trip!!).  Chris and I LOVE roller coasters, the kids need more convincing.  But we all got to do the things we wanted to do and had a great time.

IMG_1578There was also time for friends.  Aidan got to invite his friend Trinity to come spend the day and go out on the boat.  We also went to the Hatch Shell and saw his friend Tierney.  There were a couple of playdates with his friend Andrew too.  What is more fun than hanging out with friends in the summer?

I really feel like we enjoyed every part of the summer- the fun days, the chill days at home, the days we went to a pool with friends or just went to the park.  I know this is going to be a summer we all remember as a lot of fun- and one that will be hard to top!!

Thoughts on our trip

IMG_1187

We have been home from England for a week now.  Today the photobook arrived with all our pictures from our trip.  There are actually two books- one of the trip and one of just the Harry Potter pictures.

I’ve had time to think about our trip a lot.  It was so much fun but it was also an amazing experience.  There was seeing all the sites and marveling at the history of all the places we were.  But there was also the family time.  Ten uninterrupted days of the four of us having fun, laughing together and enjoying one another.  I have  said so often how much I love the kids at the ages they are at- they are independent, they are interesting and they are fun.  We could enjoy the tube and walking around, having dinner together and talking about our day.  We could plan together, we could get ideas from each other.

IMG_0804I loved holding their hands while walking, watching them hold Chris’ hand or each others.  In a few short years they won’t want to do that.  My heart melted seeing Aidan’s face with all its awe and wonder looking at the Harry Potter exhibits.  Watching Brendan sing the words to “For Good” during Wicked brought tears to my eyes.

I will remember how much I loved Canterbury and Oxford, how I almost broke my finger at Leeds Castle, how the tour “forgot” us, the night Chris’ dinner never came, seeing London from the top of the Eye, riding the tube and double decker buses and the magic of the theaters.  I will also remember my two not so little boys frozen in time when our family had a great adventure in England.  IMG_1207
