Spring Break ’18

School vacation week has become a mix of family time and time to hang out with friends- a staycation to catch up with people we like to hang out with. This one was a great one.

Vacation week kicked off with Aidan’s rescheduled airsoft birthday party. Some of the highlights included a trips to the Magic Beans rope course, 5 Wits and a trampoline park with Ella and Laurel. Brendan had a special trip (more on that later) and Aidan went to play laser tag.

March for Our Lives

The Valentine’s Day school shooting in Parkland, Florida was an awful tragedy. It was the latest in a long line of school shootings. I remember telling Chris in the days ahead that this one felt different some how. Students emerged early on sharing stories, speaking eloquently and demanding change. These kids only know of safety drills like fire drills. And they had enough.

As often happens you hear that after a tragedy it isn’t the time for politics. And they heard that too. So they set a date- more than a month away – and said this is when we march. And all around the country thousands joined in just as we did here in Boston.

It’s not about getting rid of the Second Amendment or all guns. It’s about sensible gun control. There is no need of a citizen to need a military grade weapon to protect their home or game shoot.

It was an inspiring day to see so many people marching and to read their signs. It does feel like change is coming. The mid-term elections will surely be a sign of how people are feeling.

Love, Simon

Months ago I heard that Greg Berlanti, on the producers and writers from Dawson’s Creek, was going to direct a teen movie featuring a gay love story. Berlanti has gone on to do lots and lots of other things but Dawson’s Creek will always be my favorite. A teen love story featuring a gay character is something that had not been done. I was interested both in the movie and how it would be received.

Then Bren found out about it.

He knew all the details- the book it was based on, the actors in the movie and when it was coming to theaters. He insisted we needed to see it. I learned through social media that there would be a preview in Boston and took the boys to see it.

Needless to say- it was great. I wrote about it for Scary Mommy.
